The Lame and Lazy

 

 

This Enclosure is home to three vervet monkeys that will never be able to return to the wild, they all have injuries which would render them unable to survive. There is Eyeless who is totally blind after being wounded by a pellet gun and losing one eye the other eye gradually became infected, an eye specialist was called but nothing could be done, she has however given birth to a male called Efah and this made a great difference to her life. She is given her food by hand and a soft spot is found by everyone who meets her she is so gentle and she gets deservedly spoilt.

 

MayMay was purposely run over by a motorist and was picked up by local Africans who tried to hang her with wire she was rescued by passing motorist. She has slight brain damage and is blind in one eye, she found acceptance with the other monkeys difficult so can never been released. She waits with eyeless at feed times and is another sweet monkey that likes to be hand fed.

 

Halftail is the third in the enclosure, she had been injured and an old wound from a snare had skin grown over it, this had caused a hernia which had to be operated on, she also had a broken tail.

These monkeys live alongside the wild troop and are visited and groomed daily by them, throughout the day the whole group will visit and they all play nicely together, they have a relatively good life inspite of their injuries  and the fact that their enclosure is small and run down nevertheless they are well fed and their enclosure is kitted out with natural trees to try and make life as comfortable as possible., two or three times a week new branches are cut down by Henry and placed in their enclosure this is also an opportunity to clean the cage thoroughly.

    

 This enclosure is also used to house any monkeys that are bought in until they are well enough and also to get them accepted into the troop.
